Appetite Suppressing Chewing Gum?

Posted: Wednesday, 14 December, 2011 | Categories: appetite suppressant, chewing gum

Appetite suppressant gum looks set to be a possibility according to research carried out at Syracuse University. Researchers have been looking into the hormone, hpYY, a hormone that is released naturally in the intestinal area when a person eats. Injecting the hormone has proved to work in the past and in previous studies; it was shown that people consumed 30% less calories when on this type of treatment but what about the possibility of a chewing gum form? The fact that there are receptors on the tongue indicates that the drug could work best in chewing gum form, even over a tablet form but the hormone needs to get straight into the blood stream. Even stomach acid would destroy the hormone in pill form if consumed this way.

As of yet, there is no treatment other than Xenical available for weight loss so people are really getting exciting over anything. There is no evidence to suggest that by chewing, the hormone will be released into the blood quickly enough. The countdown begins for The Food and Drug Administration’s decision on Qnexa, a decision that is set to be made by April 2012.
